  We are shifting from expansion to contraction in every aspect of life. In the aspect of our lives that deals with food we only need to look toward the irony of the Standard American Diet (SAD) to get an idea of where the alleged greatest country in the world sits. With concepts such as comfort foods, empty calories, and the various diet forms; it is no surprise then that most people know very little about food. There is plenty of information about food-like substances, margarine, and highly processed “foods”. Most of us can quote calories, fat, carb content but are we really talking about food?

According to the more than 6000 year old Indian science of Ayurveda:

Ayurveda places special emphasis on “Ahara” (diet) and “Anna” (food) as a means to good life, health, and wellness. Healthy and wholesome food nourishes the mind, body, and soul. Ayurveda asserts that although the digestive capacity of each person may be different, the quality and appropriate quantity of food are necessary for a healthy life. Food taken in proper quantity provides strength, vigor, good complexion and nurtures the health of the tissues (Amala Guha,  Ayurvedic Concept of Food 2006).

A requirement for something to be considered food is the answer to the question how wholesome to an individual’s constitutional make up is this item? That is, how well does the food item assist the individual’s physiological make up in the context of, how their body produces energy, processes and eliminates waste, and their overall level of vitality. In Ayurveda these concepts are known as the three doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three aspects are components of how Ayurvedic medicine explains energy dynamics with each making up a portfolio including physical characteristics, emotional responses and what type of illnesses are likely to develop.  In addition, the three doshas relate to the 6 Rasas or Tastes.

  • Sweet-rice, figs, coconut, milk, cane sugar
  • Sour-Cheese, yogurt, lemon, oranges
  • Salty-sea salt, kelp
  • Pungent-onion, radish, ginger, garlic, cayenne pepper
  • Bitter-rhubarb, dandelion root, osha
  • Astringent-lettuce, unripe banana, potatoes, apples, cabbage

According to David N Russell, PhD. in Health Solutions: A guide to Simple Healing and Healthy Wisdom, Ayurvedic principles suggest that each meal should include the 6 Rasas. Similar to Traditional Chinese medicine, whereby, the taste of the herb determines the organ that is affected; the 6 Rasas stimulate a particular aspect of healing and energy processing in various parts of the mind and body. For example, during the process of eating the Sweet taste begins the energetic transfer and then passes on the remaining item to extract the next Rasas that is Sour, then Salty, and moving through the above Rasas ending with Astringent.

Examples of these food types mirror much of the diet of people in so-called developing nations, which could be one reason why there is less cancer, heart disease, or diabetes than in the developed world. In addition, the converse is true, once these people leave their diets behind and begin to eat the SAD Western diet then they begin to manifest the same dis-eases of the developed world. Surely, this is more than a coincidence.

The above list is by no means complete and exhaustive. Further, no food is completely one taste or another just as no food is completely protein or completely carbohydrate, each food is usually two or more tastes with one that is more dominant. However, as we will address  in future writings, these foods can be blended and combined with the aid of various herbs and spices to maintain the integrity of the digestive process and fulfill the prescribed function.


6 Healing Sounds to Consider Expansion

Early in my development a dear friend of mind introduced me to Mantak Chia’s Transforming Stress into Vitality. This small paperback book introduced me to a world of energy development and healing that continues to be a part of my daily existence. What seemed at the time to be unrelated parts of my life–the anger, worry, and deep sadness I felt–Mantak Chia revealed in this work as an intimate connection between the manifestations of the inner state of my organs. Not necessarily the physical organs per se, but the organ function.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, the liver function governs the flow of energy through the blood around the  entire body. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine illustrates the effect disrupted liver energy has on the body, “”Liver is like a general, and plans and schemes are made from here.” When we experience anger we produce an inhibition in the  forward movement of our life force to all of the major organs and therefore we become stuck in our lives. This can be seen in the movements of an angry person. Their movements can appear sudden with jerking limb actions that stop and start suddenly rather than move smooth and effortlessly. Or someone experiencing depression may find it difficulty to make it out of bed or sleep late into the day. This expression represents a liver energy that is bound and rarely moves or moves very slowly– known as binding liver depression. Each organ has a balanced and unbalanced expression.

It is this kind of knowledge that Mantak Chia employs in an easy to understand accessible manner. With the The Inner Smile practice he teaches us to get into true knowledge of self. To experience our inner state, become aware of our organs and sense and feel them. Many people are not even aware where their liver or other organs are located within the body. In fact many men and women speak about their body in terms like “down there” or their “guts”. This kind of knowledge of self should be taught from the very beginning of our education. It would go along way toward stemming the need for many pills and medications.

In his treatment of the six healing sounds Mantak Chia begins with the lungs, however, I have found that beginning with the liver sound works better for my body. It is possible that he may begin with the lungs to start with a purification process. Each person is different which is the reason there are so many chi kung forms and sets. The element of wood corresponds to the liver and is the sound shu. Next, is the fire element that governs the heart and makes the sound har with a soft h. Then, we have earth which goes along with the spleen whoo (like blowing out a candle). Next, is the element metal which functions with the lungs and the sound sss. Then, we have water that goes with kidney and the sound shree. Finally, the practices ends with the triple heater sound heee which can be done lying down or seated and goes with three different tones a high-pitched, middle and low-pitched hee at three different levels starting over the head, progressing to the middle of the body, finishing with below the navel. In the Mantak Chia version the sound occurs in a wave that is visualized from above the head and progresses through the body like a giant steam roller over the body.
